James taught her how to golf from the time she was five years old. When she was 8, she started competing in events. She won 50 titles as a junior in only four years. She was a finalist at in 2014 at the US Women's Open at Pinehurst No. aged 15 with her dad alongside her as caddie. Lee was unable to make the LPGA Tour cut at the 2015 ANA Inspiration by just one shot. Lee participated for the USA at the Junior Ryder Cup Junior Solheim Cup Curtis Cup Women's World Amateur Team Championship and the Junior Ryder Cup. Lee became Stanford's most accomplished golfer to ever grace the university in 2016, when she received nine awards over the next three years.
